CAN PLAYING DRUMS REALLY LEAD TO A CAREER ?
The answer to that is actually yes, though its doubtful whether you'd be playing with Keane, The Rolling Stones or Megadeath anytime soon. Although playing in a famous band is not entirely out of the question, its just a bit more difficult as there are so many puzzle pieces involved getting to that place. That's not to say you can't - at all. We talk about that in detail during lessons.
However there is always work for a good and solid drummer who knows how to be an ensemble player [band member] it just takes a lot of work, like anything else that's worth doing.
The problem with getting exceptionally good on any instrument is - Practice. And the problem with Practice is this - most people start playing because they want to have Fun, they don't want it to be like schooling or a job, they just want to have a laugh, possibly be a bit cooler and or .... "famous". Here be the stumbler, once your playing has caught up with your natural amount of ability [which it always does], it starts to get harder. Adult students generally know this and are braced for it, but many young students have a more difficult time during those stages. Often its expected that the teacher becomes the "exciter". But the truth is …..
All you can do is to keep working, more times than not once a student begins to see small changes and can execute things they once couldn't, they begin to self motivate - and that rules supreme, no amount of pep rallying or compliments from a teacher can do what self motivation and accomplishment can for oneself. All great musicians are filled with an over abundance of driving force which is fueled only by their self motivation. In the simplest of terms - sticking with it is key - and only the student can do that.
For those who want to stretch their skill set and broaden their musical scopes [making them of course much more valuable as a player] we go through harmonic structure on keyboards as well an introduction to using your voice - this all ties in with singing and composition. As a matter of fact many of the EDWS students have picked up an additional instrument along the way e.g. guitar, bass and keyboards and can and do go back and forth between instruments depending on the situation.
A vast majority of students who have walked through these doors have ended up making their living in the industry. See below for a very quick sampling:
